In a Shavian Lifetime

Something Chuck McEwan (Executive Producer for the Master Playwright Festival) pointed out to me the other day was just how much change Shaw saw in the world during his lifetime (it helps if your lifetime is nearly a century: 1856 to 1950). I took a stroll on the information superhighway (bless you, Wikipedia) and pulled out some milestones that caught my eye, missing many in the process I'm sure.

Crazy, no?

  2. That's crazy, but consider this-

I was born in 1983. In the 28 years that I've been alive, the Berlin Wall has fallen, computer have gone from being a luxury item for the very rich to a common household item and cell phones (first introduced commercially in 1983) have become a pox, bringing along with it texting and the insanity that is it's mutation of the english language.

The first genetically modified food was put on the market in 1996, the Euro came into existence in 1999 and drastically 9/11 changed the way the western world view terrorism (and by extension, air travel). Also in 2001, gay marriage became legal in Canada.

Soon we'll see the death of the video store, the next step in computing power and the first generation raised with ideas like green jobs and no conception of a world without the internet.

Facebook was only started in 2004! (Social Networking began around 1997 with SixDegrees)

That's just 28 years. There is more to come!

  3. There is indeed. Imagine what we'll see in the next fifty years. It's exciting and terrifying at the same time - and I'm not sure which I feel more.
